Tuscan Lodge Gets Facelift in Preparation of 100th Anniversary

Published by Board of Trustees under News

On November 9th, 1907, the cornerstone was laid for the Tuscan Lodge, located at 5015 Westminster Place.  On November 9th, 2007, a celebration will kick-off a year’s worth of events to commemorate the history of the building.

In preparation for the celebration, the Tuscan Lodge has replaced its roof, maintained, repaired, or replaced the chimney, gutters, and front steps, and are preparing to repair and paint front surfaces, columns, trim, and rear fire escape.  Over the next twelve months, the Tuscan will address landscaping and replacement of the fence line and of ornamental pole lights which were stolen about fifteen years ago.

The Tuscan Lodge is the second home of a fraternal organization of local Missouri Freemasons founded in 1870 and still active today.

The goal of the Masonry is to take good men and make them better.  Certainly, this is evident through the achievements of members of the Tuscan Lodge.  Among them are four governors of Missouri, two mayors of St Louis, and three U.S. Senators.  Albert Bond Lambert was a member, as was Branch Rickey, former manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, who, as general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, signed Jackie Robinson to a contract, breaking major league baseball’s color barrier.  A frequent visitor to the Tuscan Lodge was Harry S. Truman, a Missouri Freemason, whose friend and military aide, Harry Vaughn, was a member.
